ATD Fourth World-Ireland is part of an international anti-poverty organisation. Since 1999, it has been working with individuals, families and communities experiencing persistent poverty, and with organisations involved with them in the fight against poverty and social exclusion.
As a member of the National 17 October Committee, ATD Fourth World-Ireland coordinates, each year, the preparation and staging of the 17 October commemoration of the World Day for Overcoming Extreme Poverty.
Joseph Wresinski, founder of ATD Fourth World, was the inspiration behind this UN Day. His words are engraved on the Commemorative Stone in Honour of the Victims of Extreme Poverty, on Custom House Quay, where the commemoration takes place. These words are:“Wherever men and women are condemned to live in poverty, human rights are violated. To come together to ensure that these rights are respected is our solemn duty.”
