Children’s Rights Alliance Welcomes Progression of New Senior Cycle Reform

The Children’s Rights Alliance welcomes the announcement today (09.05.25) that the Government is one step closer to rolling out the Senior Cycle Reform Programme.

Commenting on the announcement today, Tanya Ward, Chief Executive of the Children’s Rights Alliance  said:

“Stress has blighted young people’s education for far too long. Young people have been calling for reform of the Senior Cycle for well over 20 years. Much of the programme has not been updated and its over emphasis on rote learning has meant that our young people have not been prepared effectively for further study and working life. This simply isn’t good enough.”

“It is welcome that the Government and teachers’ unions have worked in close collaboration on a package to support the rollout of the programme. This includes new specific posts for the implementation of Senior Cycle Redevelopment as well as dedicated working groups to support implementation on specific topics, including on AI. Early rapid reviews of the new curricula as and when they roll out is also planned. This will ensure the students and teachers are supported to engage with new subjects.”

“In our view, these are essential measures to ensure the successful roll out of the Senior Cycle programme and it is paramount that young people are involved every step of the way.”

Tanya Ward continued

“We welcome the Minister and teachers’ unions commitment to reforming the Senior Cycle. However, we believe it is critical that the Government move ahead with plans to review the points system which continues to contaminate our education system.  Every time young people are asked about what they want to change at senior cycle, they single out the points system as being brutal and unfair. We encourage the Government and all stakeholders involved to keep young people front and centre of our education reforms and take on a points system we know places undue stress on students.”
