Hygiene Hub is a grassroots, people-powered charity working to end hygiene poverty by freely providing hygiene items to those who need them across the country. We believe that being clean is a right, not a privilege and yet many in Ireland cannot afford many of the everyday essential hygiene items that most of us take for granted. Recent research shows that 65% of people have gone without or cut back on the use of personal hygiene and/or household cleaning products as a result of their financial situation. As a charity, we work with 134 organisations across the country through our 10 Hubs located in Cork, Donegal, Dublin, Galway, Kilkenny, Limerick, Louth, Tipperary, Wexford and Wicklow. They include organisations and charities supporting the homeless, family resource centres, women’s refuges, schools, as well as those supporting refugees. We know that, although providing hygiene items will provide immediate support and it is very valuable, it cannot fix the root of the problem. The second strand of our work is to raise awareness of hygiene poverty, undertake research into its extent and its impacts and to advocate for increased supports and policy change.
