Children’s Rights Alliance welcomes changes to the Adoption (Amendment) Bill

The Children’s Rights Alliance today welcomed changes made to the Adoption (Amendment) Bill by Minister Dr Katherine Zappone TD that strengthen children’s rights in the Bill. Dr Zappone was speaking at an Adoption Authority of Ireland conference today on the Bill.

Commenting on the changes, Tanya Ward, Chief Executive said that:

“The Bill is a major step forward for children because it provides for second-parent adoptions and it outlines clear steps for children in long-term foster care to be adopted by their foster parents.

The Minister has brought forward amendments to the Bill that will ensure that decisions made in relation to adoptions will be in the best interests of the child. She has also strengthened how the voice of children will be heard in these circumstances. The Children’s Rights Alliance, its members and Founding Patron, Professor Geoffrey Shannon, had been calling for these changes and we commend the Minister and her officials for their sterling work in bringing this important Bill forward."
